New Books And DVDs
Hudson Music has released three new educational products, Tommy Igoe's Groove Essentials 2.0 DVD/book/CD; the second Turn It Up & Lay It Down book/CD package, Messin' Wid Da Bull; and What Drives The Beat, an instructional DVD by Shadows Fall drummer Jason Bittner.
Messin’ Wid Da Bull features funk, R&B, and jazz/rock play-along tracks. The package includes thirteen original compositions and professionally recorded tracks—minus drums—that pay homage to the great horn bands of the '70s, such as Earth Wind & Fire, Blood Sweat & Tears, Tower Of Power, Chicago, and Average White Band. Throughout the book, author and educator Jeff Salem provides a comprehensive look at how to approach funk-style grooves and fills and set up horn figures. Retail price: $24.95.
What Drives The Beat is Jason Bittner's first full-length solo video project. It features a wealth of performance and instructional content aimed at aspiring young metal players, but is applicable to many styles, ages, and ability levels. One of the highlights of the DVD is Jason's presentation of his Double-Bass Crash Course. The step-by-step method for developing foot control, power, endurance, and speed is explained and demonstrated in detail, while foot cameras and split-screen shots augment the instructional material. Jason also discusses specific drumming concepts, such as The Basic Beats And Fills Of Metal Drumming, Developing Both Feet Evenly, Two-Handed Ride Patterns, and How To 'Metalfy' Jazz, Funk, Shuffles, Slow Blues, And World Beats.
Groove Essentials 2.0 picks up where the acclaimed drummer/author’s top-selling original left off, featuring fifty-three new grooves and over 100 variations for intermediate to advanced players. GE 2.0 also introduces the concepts of groove construction, interpretation, and manipulation, training drummers to think like musicians in order to maximize their full potential. The three-hour DVD features more than seventy new songs covering 4/4, 2/2, 6/8, and 3/4 time signatures, with three levels of difficulty for 5/4, 7/8, and 9/8 meters. A large poster of all fifty-three grooves is also included with the DVD (courtesy of Vic Firth). The Groove Essentials 2.0 DVD lists for $24.95, and the book/CD is $24.95. A specially priced DVD/book/CD combo pack sells for $39.95.
