Koa shells for the smaller budged.
Hi there everybody,
You guys know about my “Lunar Custom Shell” of which I have posted a few here.
Let me introduce the “Lunar Stock Shell.”
This is a 8 ply Keller VSS Maple shell to which I add Koa.
You are thinking veneer……Noooooooooooooooo
A healthy slice……
This is Koa that I resaw myself from solid stock like for the custom shell.
And then add to the preexisting shell in the same fashion as the Customs.
The result is a much meatier shell with solid Koa on the outside….not a veneer.
And the vertical Ebony inlay indicative of a Lunar.
To adjust for the correct, loose seating of the heads I shape the shell back toward the leading edges, a little like I shape my convex all- koa shells.
The result is a killer sounding and looking shell that can exept any lug and strainer arrangement for the fraction of the cost of my custom shells.
Don’t get me wrong I love my custom shells and have affair amount of call for them, however to often somebody test-drives them, wants one real bad, although just cannot afford them, but would like a quality shell that incorporates this wood from the same maker.
I developed this method when I was still back in Hawaii, but could not pick it back up until I got over the cumbersome move to Germany and caught up with the custom shells, and have enough Koa and supplies shipped from the US to continue them.
So here are the first ones ….This time… Made in Germany
Aloha,
